Speaking of compatibility, I was given and old CDE rotor which looks like a TR-44. I find that it is really a TR-4, apparently from the 1950's. I would like to find a control box for this rotor but

This is, indeed, a Ham-M control box. It can be used with the Ham series of rotators, since they are all pretty much identical electrically. CATS has a history page about the CDE series of rotators -

There was a difference, OTOH, I got a older box and rotator that had been modified to the newer standard. In my case, it was documented. 73, doug Is that true? What about the series I and Series II r
