Has anyone built their own coil for this antenna? With a lousy radial field you don't need a match. I installed a few more radials and now the swr has jumped and the bandwidth is tiny on this antenna

Oh yeah. SWR is sooo great when everything is lossy as all getout. More and more radials will show you where it's actually tuned, for sure. As to tuning method, text on ma160v at DX Engineering says

I think you misunderstood. I have the directions from Cushcraft. If you put this antenna under a better radial field you need a matching system. One option is a shunt coil. I used the DXE example as
