New, clean, probably just fine. I have used it as the insulator at the ends of dipoles at full power with no problems. The problem with all rough-surface insulators like braided and twisted ropes is

Don't know about your rain water, but ours is no longer clean even though I'm in the country and a long way down wind from industry. I'd put an insulator where it connects to the element on each end.
