A lot of different knots have a breaking strength in the 80% region. The figure 50% is very conservative. I have used the bowline knot finished with a stopper knot for securing rope around a thimble.

the double layer rope I've used in the past was pretty finicky about treating the cut end, both in terms of how the cut is made and processed, and also the way it is looped and knotted on the D ring.
