If you look at the new ones they have a metal piece attached to the output shaft that covers the top of the gear box so it may not be all that different. You only have to keep the water out of there,

I've never had one of the new ones apart, but looking at the photos and taking *similar* literally then I'd say yet they are similar. They appear to use the same bearings, but the gears look smaller
