Someone on the Towertalk reflector recently asked whether an additional one db of antenna gain was worth pursuing. The answer, of course, was that it all depends upon how close you are to the noise l

I think your efforts should be rewarded but the test is flawed. Try using QRP and an attenuator. Get a distant station to record the two transmissions...one with and one without the 1db attenuator in

Hi Dave, I don't see why his test is flawed. Seems pretty creative to me. Your suggestion probably woudn't yield consistent results because of QSB. Jim W8ZR ** Jim Garland Santa Fe, NM www.w8zr.net *

This too, isn't necessarily a fair test. It will changed the received SNR at the receiver IF the atmospheric noise dominates over the receiver noise, so in that sense it's fair as a test of "is a dB

Many years ago I was periphally involved (did a lot of the grunt work) with the first ham EME QSO by Sam Harris, W1FZJ/W1BU and W6AY at Eimac, on 1296. All the trials leading up to and including the

Let's clarify some things here before this starts wandering all over the place. 1. I wasn't trying to splits tenths of a db in terms of impact. It was intended to be a simple relative comparison with

Yes, I agree but it is more real world than MP3 files...at least we have the chance to hear the effect of receiver selectivity/sensitivity, receive antenna characteristics as well as receiver AGC, et

1 db when you're already 40 over 9 makes no difference. If you're only S1 then 1 db is valuable. It's the ratio that matters. Bob W6TR -- Original Message -- From: "David Gilbert" <xdavid@cis-broadba

Exactly right Bob, and there is a-l-w-a-y-s somewhere on the planet where you are S1 ( I am S1 in more places than most!), which is why ( especially in contests) that every dB counts. The more intere
