It's easy to solder plugs that aren't silver plated, after you remove the nickel plating. Use the tip of a small pair of slender scissors or a small reamer to remove the plating on the inside circumf

The insulators on my older (perhaps a decade+ old) 83-1SP's are tan colored and the newer ones are white PTFE. I have had no issues with either type except for one barrel that was not threaded proper

I was going to mention Crimp and Clamp, but then I saw you moving to crimp. Losing the nickle around those holes shouldn't hurt as the solder should cover any exposed brass. OTOH Nickle plating is a
