Howdy -- I've got a sloppy fit between a mast clamp and a mast - both steel. It won't shim properly so I think my only option is to pin the mast. I've done it a bunch of times and mostly they hold bu

Steve, Be certain to use high-strength bolts, not the common stuff found in hardware stores. You can obtain them at a farm supply store. Not certain .. think strength '8'? Others will know for sure.

There was a gadget called "Slip-Not" (sp?) that looked interesting, but now I can't find a link.... anybody remember it? 73, Mike NF4L _______________________________________________ ________________

I get HUGE (often in the mid-90 mph range) clear weather wind gusts here in the spring. These are thermal swirlers that can literally pull one end of the boom in one direction and the other end in th

The problem with the SlipNott (or whatever the spelling) is that it depends on the mast being very close to 2 inches. With just a little galvanizing, you end up having to deform the clamp, and then t

You didn't say what kind of mast clamp you are using. While pinning a mast is good thing in many cases, I think you need to correct the fit of the mast clamp before going any further. My prop pitch h

Hi Steve - Making the gross assumption that you have access to the bevel gear and the mast that will allow you to create a "joint", I would recommend looking carefully at the Kurt/K7NV recommendation

A good question - even a pair of "slim" shims at 90 degrees apart should work with the compression clamp. These can be ~2x the thickness of a 360 deg shim and easier to drive in. Can the clamp be spr

There is also the option of having an adapter made of the proper size, for the mast, or rotator mast clamp which would probably require the services of a machine shop. It depends on your over all ins

SteppIR uses a special bolt to pin the elements to the boom on the MonstIR. Its been a number of years since I installed my MonstIR, but what I remember is that the special bolt cut its own threads s

Some stainless alloys can be a real bear to slit using a grinder. Depending on the alloy some will plug up the grinding wheel much like Aluminum. They do make "slitting or cutting" disks for most of

Don't take this as a recommendation but rather as a data point: I have had great success with pinning masts using 4 X 3/8" grade 8 bolts. Two pinning holes are drilled completely through the mast to
