Be sure to check your 12 volt supply voltage -- maybe a poor connection. The 706 is very sensitive to low supply voltage. (note your comment that it works a little better when the engine is running).

Many rigs are sensitive to supply voltage, my old FT-757 was especially bad. What I have always done is locate a small (~5 Ah) gel cell battery right at the radio, so the radio will reliably have at
