Hi All This might seem like a silly question, but is it possible to make a 150pf capacitor out of RG-58? Thanks and I need one for an EFHW I am building. 73 Tom W7WHY ________________________________

Yes, rg58 should be about 40pf/ft. just beware, if the length becomes a significant fraction of a wavelength then you have to calculate the impedance based on the length and velocity factor. David Ro

Well - talk about a brain fart - I was thinking that the capacitance was in mFd, not pF. Seesh! Easy to figure out thenI know the right nomenclature Tom W7WHY ________________________________________

My table said 25 pF/ft. RG-8/rg-213 is 13pF/ft So, moral of the story is, check for the brand of your coax, and use the appropriate length. _______________________________________________ __________

And be even more specific -- although RG-numbers originally defined many specifications for cables, that has not been true for many decades. For example, there are hundreds of cables CALLED RG8, all

Yeah, capacitance varies. The 40pf/ft was the first one I saw in my belden book, other variations were listed at 28 or 30pf/ft. David Robbins K1TTT e-mail: mailto:k1ttt@arrl.net web: http://wiki.k1tt

When I homebrewed a trap dipole, I used stubs of RG8-ish coax as capacitors. I trimmed the stubs using a pair of wire cutters. However, when I hit it with power, the cut end of the stubs arced. I lea

The capacitance per ft and simple arithmetic will get you a DC capacitance value that is reliable but add in frequency of the applied voltage and inductance rears its head. As per others, you get a s

Seems that if you need a value that would require a length that might begin to look like a transmission line stub, you could cut it into shorter sections and parallel them.-Mike-WA6ZTY From: David Ro
