Certainly a circularly symmetrical radial system is best, but few of us are able to realize it. Mine deviates significantly from that ideal, but the antenna works well. The best and most readable des

And therefore, assuming your soil isn't bone dry and nonconductive, the arrangement of radials doesn't much affect the aziumuthal radiation pattern. In the limiting case (1 radial), yes, there is an

The reference I could not remember -- QEX, July/August 2005, page 28: Ground System Configurations for Vertical Antennas, by Al Christman, K3LC. It was done with "EZNEC4" which I assume is EZNEC v4 -

Here is the short version: 1.) radials are the "other half" of your ground-mounted vertical antenna 2.) dirt doesn't make a very good antenna construction material -- Larry N8KU l o n g w i r e . c o

Jim etal, I also measured the effect of ground radials when I loaded my 70 foot tower (with 40 meter beam on top) on 160 meters. I used an HP 9753C network analyzer and a non resonant loop about 6 fe

Thanks, Joe. What you've just shared must certainly have taken a fair amount of work on your part, but it's the most (only?) meaningful measure of a radial system. It's always encouraging to see the

I googled "Maximum Gain Radial Ground Systems for Vertical Antennas" Excellent article by Al Christman, K3LC. I THINK he's the same Christman who wrote the article on elevated radials for AM stations
