Are there any pro's / con's in using a stainless steel mast? Other than the weight (con) and the fact that I can get it cheap (pro) I would like to hear from others. 73, Allen Ross Brier, N5XZ 1515 W

The only downside I see is that the yield strength of SS can be all over the map depending on the grade, so unless you know what the grade is you may be able to determine the upper safe loading limit

Hi Folks, I found a nice length of stainless steel pipe 2" OD (.250" wall) by 10ft that I thought might make a nice mast stub. How would this tubing's strength compare to 6061 aluminum of similar dim

Dave, 6061-T6 has Tensile strength of 42K PSI and yeild at 35K PSI - See wikipedia. Stainless varies from about 75K to 190K PSI Tensile, depending on the allooy. See http://www.onlinemetals.com/stain

Dave: The important number is the yield stress not the tensile stress. 6061-T6 and the stainless, most likely 304 or even 316, have about the same yield of 36,000 psi plus or minus. This is the thres

Hank, you didn't address the pipe vs tubing issue. Is pipe with a seam inherently much weaker than seamless tubing of the same material and wall thickness? 73, Pete N4ZR New Articles Daily - the Cont

Forgot to click replay to all.   Ok hopefully this helps vs more confusion.  The difference between pipe and tube is simply in the way it is sized Pipe and is measured on the inside.   Tube and is me

Pipe is NOT specified by an inside diameter. It is specified by a "trade size" that is APPROXIMATELY the inside diameter and may be smaller or larger than the actual diameter, depending on the wall t

Glad were all in agreement that the 1/4" walled 10 foot stick of stainless steel mask is more than up to the challenge, plus it won't rust  :)   They make structural pipe too.  ( not sold at Lowe's o
