What a great group! I have one more antenna curiosity for my second QTH....I work up north during the week and stay in my RV...I have the good fortune of having access to the tall pine trees (>100' t

I wouldn't use a 4:1 balun, (if you are converting to coax near the shack) since the open wire feeder is likely to be terminated at the antenna end with an impedance other than 400 ohm resistive. Thi

causes 160m I didn't near you mention radials under the LW. Both of your complaints are exactly what one would expect without radials. Antennas do NOT work against "ground," they work against a refer

If you think about it for a moment, you should be able to see why you have the rfi problem and why the antenna is noisy. One half of your antenna is up in the tree. The other half of your antenna is

One more note about feeding the Cobra as a T on 160. To do this you will probably need two sets of feedlines, and a switch box out by the radial system. You could use open wire to feed the Cobra, and

I agree with Jim. Feed with coax and use a UnUn or current balun like DX Engineering sells for this. AND COMPLETE THE RADIAL FIELD - Whether or not you lay them on the ground. Even if you do the Inve

What is so difficult about trying to match a half wave antenna, fed at one end? I have done this many times without difficulty, by using a parallel tuned circuit, with one end connected to the groun

The problem with end feeding a half wave wire on 160 (in this case configured as an L) is that most people who operate 160 soon discover that you need an amplifier. That translates into big voltages

YES! I ran into this when trying to load a vertical that was essentially a quarter wave on 160 and a half wave on 80M. It worked, but the high voltage makes it a lot more complicated in all the ways
