I think I totally ignored mismatch losses Re: the 17dB total loss in my calculation ... turns out filling a line with water tends to alter its characteristic impedance. So I may be a good bit off wit

That water station data is interesting, Dan. There seems to be at least some correlation between that big conductance spike and the turbidity. Perhaps it depends on who is flushing their toilet upstr

I think it'd be comparable or better than a normal earth ground close to the antenna system and give a more predictable elevation pattern. 73 Roger (K8RI) ____________________________________________

Given the location of that river, it is quite possible that someone dumped something in there that changed the conductivity :-) _______________________________________________ _______________________

Just because they are a "broadcast station" doesn't necessarily mean they knew what they were doing when they built it. I know of a station that is built on top of a large rocky hill. It has terrible

The issue of a freshwater pond being a better location than rocky soil has been discussed at length. While the pond itself might not be highly conductive, the mud around it is a lot better than dry d

Actually for a 1 kw station on 1340 with a 73 degree stick you get out pretty well. I looked at your contours and the fringe looks like it's about 80 miles from your tx site. not bad for 1 kw non-DA

I was outside pondering the vast amount of ice melter they use around here when we get (infrequent) snows and it occured to me that it's very possibly runoff from heavily salted parking lots. 73 Dan

More proof that fresh water is more of a insulator than a reflector is found in the very fine article "The 3Y0X Peter 1 Island 160 Meter Beam" by K4DLI and W6XX in the March 2009 QST on page 37. I kn

The discussion on putting your antenna over a bod of fresh water leaves me with these general conclusions: 1) It is difficult to quantify the positive effects of placing your antenna over fresh water

And at Peter Island, the ice was thick, and there was very little biological matter underneath. Underneath a shallow lake, the bottom is soaked. If there are also ions, conductivity should be good. S
