How many beads of what type material are needed to construct a choke balun, using RG303, for a balanced antenna operating 40M-10M? How many beads for the same thing operating from 80M-10M? I would li

It depends on how much common mode voltage you have across the balun. A minimum rule-of-thumb is to design the balun to handle 1/4 rated power in a test fixture with the ground side reversed on the

One. One. Use an FT-240-77. Wind the coax on the core. For a 50 ohm feedpoint, about 6 turns should be adequate for 40m-10m. 8-9 turns for 80m-10m. This isn't the W2DU design, but the W1JR design. Sa

I'm sure one 77-material core will not handle 1500 watts (or even less) in all cases, so we have to be careful using that material. 77 material is very low Q, with Q reaching unity below 160 meters.

The RG-303 is a teflon-insulated coax (and quite stiff, I might add), so you don't have to worry quite so much about center conductor migration as you with with foam-type coax. RG-142 and RG-316 are
