For the past eight weeks, my XM240 has been sitting in my back yard on concrete blocks, awaiting the arrival of my 4 element SteppIR. Today I removed a couple of the elements and found a lot of water

An additional note: I just found out that the loading coils on this antenna are not wound on solid rods like I had thought, they are wound on tubes. So a leak anywhere in the element can send water t

Don't rule out condensation. The last time I folded my tower over, I took an end cap off my 40-2CD and a ton of water came out. This is in Yuma, AZ, where it hadn't rained in months. After that, I le

You can NEVER seal water OUT, only condensation IN. You must let it drain. So the secret is to allow the water to flow out where you want it to so that it never accumulates any significant amount of

I never use end caps on elements or the boom. I just see them as a moisture trap and I really haven't seen any problems with not using them. I did have a wasp nest in one of my lower antennas once, b

My concern wouldn't be for the operation of the antenna, but what might happen if I attempted to work on it with the nest there. I've disturbed a nest and had them come after me and it wasn't much f

A few years ago while visiting Frank, W3LPL, he told me he was using something better than Penetrox for aluminum joints. Turns out the tower crews we use at work are using the same stuff! It is great

Tim-- The only problem I see is that Kopr-Shield is recommended for copper to copper connections ONLY. Whereas Penetrox is designed for aluminum to aluminum or aluminum to copper use. --John W0UN Kop

The SteppIR's elements have an interesting solution. They have pieces of round foam stuck in the ends of the elements. They are supposed to let any water out whilst keeping the critters out. The boo

After some more investigation of my XM240 water problem, here are my findings: 1. Water is allowed into the elements around the screws used to attach the loading-hat. 2. I dissembled the elements and

XM240 One thing you should do before raising that antenna. Check the continuity of the coils. Mine had four coils that were open, two on each antenna. Cushcraft relies on pressure from a self-tapping
