I see a cracked foundation in Figure 4 ... so where is the exploding foundation?? My BS detector is turned on. Want evidence? See Figure 4 (and the text below it) in the link below: http://www.mikeho
The article does say what the cause of this crack was. Here is what they said: "A word of caution: A Ufer ground consisting solely of the tower foundation is a bad idea. Lightning surges passing thro
Jim / Paul / Doug and list: I have been holding back from responding to this thread as I have responded to this idea in the past, but I just couldn't hold back any more. The exploding concrete concep

That's kind of what it looked like to me, but I'm not a foundations and concrete kind of guy. If indeed the water in the concrete flashed to steam ( a There IS a report out there talking about proble
I'm firmly in the camp that says exploding foundations are a myth. I've spent hours and hours searching the internet and haven't been able to find a single documented case of a grounded tower foundat
The latter first..Different chemistry inside and outside the concrete? But, copper is pretty resistant to corrosion in general.. I doubt it's a concern. But, for wild speculation's sake.. what if the
All this talk of concrete exploding due to the moisture flashing to steam is "in my opinion" absolute crap. The only way steam can occur is if the water in the concrete is subject to atmospheric pres
Hi, Jim. I think we mostly agree here. You make a good devil's advocate, though ;) Regarding copper corrosion, if the ground environment was as extreme as you say, my guess is that any ground rods (c

We're talking the bottom of the foundation which is typically 4 to 8' below the surface. In most parts of the country the ground temperature that deep doesn't vary much over the period of a year. So
I have seen a few concrete bases cracked from lightning strikes. These were all where there was no ground system attached to the tower at all. Just the tower attached to the J bolts in the concrete.
Hi, Gary. Yes, I agree. I didn't mean to say that concrete cannot explode. It certainly can, and non-uniform heat accomplishes the task quite well. I just don't believe that concrete is **more likely
Well if you put a torch to concrete, even 40 year old stuff, it will blow up in your face, could be moisture in the concrete. my 3 1/2 cents worth. Charles, KC9DAO ^ ^ -- Original Message -- From: "D
I am calling you on this. What is a few ... one, two, five, more than five? How do you know that these bases were cracked from lightning strikes and not from some other action? Please explain. Did yo
Well thank you Doug! I didn't know that my credibility had a score card. It's so nice to know that someone is keeping track. It seems these answers are awfully important to you so I will oblige. You
