One aspect of the lightning protection problem that is often overlooked is the potential difference that can develop between equipment that is interconnected. A lightning event will raise the potenti

RG-8 style coax shields won't take much current before they melt, but as I mentioned, I have two runs of 1-5/8" heliax running between the tower and shack, connected to the tower ground system at on

Wellll...Kinda, sorta...almost...maybe. There are a lot of variables, but IF that copper tube represents a low resistance, low impedance, high current capable, insulated from ground, path into the s

True, and you are not going to melt this. And your numbers look close. If it is 1/64 thick, then each of these lines would have just slightly less copper than a #00 wire, and lower skin resistance. D

It is also a requirement of the National Electrical Code to bond the tower ground to the service entrance ground. Improper bonding may give an insurance company an out if a claim was made due to ligh

I read somewhere, maybe from Polyphaser's notes, that the purpose of the tower ground system is to spread the charge caused by lightning to as much earth as possible. There is obviously a point of di

There will be a great amount of capacitive coupling to ground provided by those long cables even being insulated. A great deal of lightning energy is connected to earth by capacitance in any ground

Would it help to run 1/4" copper tubing (as used for refrigerator ice makers) in the trench? Then bond that to several ground rods and also tape the coax to that tubing. Carl KM1H ___________________

Copper strap is cheaper than tubing for a given amount of surface area verses tubing. If I had a choice of where to run that extra copper I would run it in another direction from the tower and some f

You might want to do some calcs (on the capacitive reactance of a big radial system) before you say that a DC ground is BETTER. Having a DC connection in addition to the capacitive coupling IS better

I thought that by saying that "a DC (bare wire) connection would be better and help more with the low frequency energy coupling" would be taken to mean that it would be better than just the capaciti
