As a comment,  I am all for this "upgrade" yes sure I can see where abuse could happen, but i see the better and i think bigger picture of what this affords to us as readers and even casual readers.

My big gripe with groups.io is that it does not quote the message being replied to  when using the web interface.   There is a way to do it but it is not the default and it is not easy to find. What

Actually it is pretty easy.  It took me a while to find out how though! On the Web interface for groups.io  you can simple highlight with the mouse, click, hold pull down, etc  what you want to quote
