I think that many that have a 706/FT100/FT857 today only use the VHF/UHF side for FM work. But you do bring out a good point-the FCC didn't do the VHF/UHF crowd any favors by dropping the code. 73s J

My experience agrees with Zack's. I checked the membership roles of the Southeastern VHF Society one time. Over 100 hams active on weak signal. 90% were extras. Only a couple were Techs. Most techs I
