I looked in my 901DM service manual and don't see any problem in the troubleshooting guide specifically related to the noise you refer to. The closest would be 'no reception' or 'partial reception'.

Some thoughts from among falling snow flakes... Given that the noise generates an S9 reading, we can exclude all audio related circuits. Different VFO didn't help either, so it can be excluded as wel
