The network card does not use a com port. There is a HotSync cradle that uses the USB port. You can get that one, if so inclined, and free up a com port. Sounds like you may have an external modem. A

As Carl and Dave said, you don't use a comport for your network card. It does use up an IRQ though, and that may be a problem. Given what you have told us, I would suggest you put in a serial port sw
