I'm planning on putting up some Beverages for the fall season...primarily for use on 160. Unfortunately, they have to be taken down again in the Spring for crops. The good news is they can be any len

I'm sure it varies a lot from QTH to QTH, but here, over mostly volcanic ash and sand, I could see significant difference between 800 foot and 1100 foot. I never got around to trying longer than 1100

Hi Bill, Longer Beverages provide narrower beamwidth, which reduces QRM or QRN that would be received through the main lobe of a shorter Beverage. (just like adding elements to a Yagi narrows its bea

At a prior home I had a couple of 1200-1500' that heard quite well to the NE and SE on the real long haul DX. When I extended the 1200 to 2200' it became a real dog. Here Ive been content with 500-75

If I every put up a Slinky-style Beverage, I'm probably going to try #12 TW solid insulated copper wire. Probably will close-wind it on a ~4" diameter fixture made from PVC pipe, and then stretch it

The best thing I ever did for Topband receiving was to lay out a 220 foot wire on the ground pointed NE to Europe. I then put one down for 480 feet due West. Switching from one to the other was drama

Thats where a simple active homebrew combiner could be helpful instead of wasting $600 on a fancy box. When they get down to $200 or someone else duplicates the performance at that price Id be intere

Carl, Ok. I think the thing to do is just experiment with the length/pitch. Stretch it out along the rope, past the point where it fires backwards (and then some), maybe. Using your idea I wonder if

Hi Jim, As we move the turns closer, we increase the velocity factor too much. At some point, the Slinky will receive off the opposite (feed) end. Tom explains it at www.w8ji.com/slinky_and_loaded_be

There is really nothing new to explain. It has been established since the mid 1920's that the Beverage is a slow wave antenna, ie: it has a velocity factor, and at an electrical 50% VF it will revers

In my experience, a 50% VF is associated with a wire lying on the ground and is in the lower end of measured VF's for wires laying on the ground. 45% is the lowest I have seen personally. A regular b
