Went into the week before the contest not even knowing if I was going
to operate. Callsign comments, Broken rotor on tower #2 (Beam fixed NE),
Line Noise and the biggie, my wife just home from the hospital after
surgery. After discussing the events of the week with her she said
just get on and "KB!!". Yep...spoken like a true NCCC'er!!
160: Nil....
80: Too damn noisy....line noise was high. Band never really
sounded well....Maybe due to the line noise...
40: Broadcast stations seemed louder than ever....Just when
you find a run freq, the bells and music start up from a
broadcast station coming on the air. Band here also
sounded bad....Never had loud sigs from W6 or the East Coast
always were no more than 10-15 db over...
20: The Greatest band of them all....Seemed like the other
10,000 people on 20 thought the same!! Real hard to find
a hole, Had the Tape loop guy stop by a few times and also
heard the SSTV's down at 14.227. Those guys arent even
human....Signals at 21z from the east coast were 20-30 over.
N2IC had the most consistant 20-30db over sig on the band!!
Congrats Steve!! You must be running excess power also...ha!
15: Was a great band Saturday afternoon, Sunday was the pitts!
Either signals from W8 and W5 were 20 over or they were S0!!
With no signals you could hear a pin drop...Thought it would
be the band for Sunday, but kept coming up dry...Back to 20!!
10: See you here in 2 more years....Maybe!!
With having to wait on my wife I had to take off at weird
times...and several hours at a time. Maybe this helped...
At 23z sunday something happened to the power pole and the line noise
went to 15-30 over on 20-80 meters!! We had had high winds and
rain/snow Saturday and sunday which kept the noise down quite a
bit, but at 23z that was it. Was very hard to work anybody for the
last 3 hours of the contest. The Timewave DSP helped alot but
I know I must have missed up to 75-100 Q's during that time.
After the contest I called my buddy who is the new Supervisor
of the RFI group at the Power Company and told him this was it.
I had this problem for a year and I was going to call his supervisor
and send letters to the FCC. This problem also creats noise bars on
our NEW TV for the past year!! He said...Hold off...Monday there was
a crew out and fixed the problem!!! I should have called him
thursday before the contest!!
One thing that disturbs me....Why is it when somebody wins or is in
the top ten somebody is ALWAYS raising the flag and calling Foul!!
It seems that I always hear people pointing the finger at
others and claiming they are running High Power!! Or they cheated
in some way....These people need to get a life!! And for us who
sit in the background and say nothing back to these people are
basicly agreeing with them. This really does nothing for
contesting for the good, and just adds to the growing negativeness
to the contesting community. These comments are almost NEVER
backed by fact....Just some idiot trying to get attention. What
is bad is that these people are FELLOW CONTESTERS.
So before you open your mouth and splat off about guys running
high power and other LIES..Think about it first...then jump in your
nice $90,000 car and drive off a bridge.....
It will sure save us and you alot of grief in the end......
....Now I feel much better!!
See Ya in CQWW CW!!
