Spent 8 hours in the TARA rtty contest on Saturday so did not put
in a full effort. Conditions overall were quite good. Too bad the band did
not produce a big European opening. I had the beam west on Sunday and all
of a sudden I heard a weak F5 calling me. Put the antenna to EU and F5TDK
called in followed by 5 more F stations and a GU0. I left the antenna
to the east for several more cq's and Z21AV and D25L called in. That was
all that was worked to the east. Was nice to work ZL2DX, and a WH6 to the
west. Was very interesting how the band opened to certain areas of the
country and all of a sudden it would change and a totally different area
would boom in. Sometimes it would be a very small area. I know this band
is known to do this but I have never seen changes happen so rapidly in
the past.
The strangest thing I've ever experienced in a contest was during
this contest. At 1631z, 2 stations answered my cq. The first guy was
WB1FBS in MA. After I worked him I told the other station to go ahead.
His call was WB4FBS in TX. I can see this happening with a 1X2, but a 2X3!
The 10M contest is the only contest that I enjoy operating SSB.
Hope you had as much fun as I did. Happy Holidays!
