First of all, let me thank all who have made Windwood a reality, especially
Larry Reader, KE2VB and Lorrin Woodman. This was my first attempt at
operating from a DX location and it was a blast. It has been a dream since I
was a novice. St Croix is a beautiful island with all of the comforts of
home, good restaurants, beaches, shopping and a functional competitive contest
station. The photos I saw before the trip did not adequately describe the
location. You are on the very top of a 900 foot hill with a 360 deg. view of
the water, the highest house on the island. The house is beautiful with all
of the conveniences and probably one the best views in the entire Caribbean.
I made a checklist of things to take on the trip, and can say now that I
didn't need anything that wasn't already there. In fact, I didn't use all of
the equipment there, such as a backup IC-751.
I set a goal of 4.2MM points using the formula 4200 Qs X 2.45 Pt/Q X 310 C X
105 Z. I used WinCap to predict the MUF and planned to operate around 40
hours. I beamed Europe when possible. Last minute reality said that I could
not stay awake that long and I scaled things back to around 4000 Qs. I
figured around 1000 Qs each on 40 thru 15. As you can see my goals were met
through a different mix of Qs and mults thanks to a good 10M opening. In
retrospect I should have operated more than 34 hours, especially Saturday
night on 160-40. I spent a lot of time multiplier hunting due to the lack of
a second radio, but would do it again. I would do a quick sweep of the band
for multipliers whenever a band change was evident. WinCap missed the 10M
openings by an hour or so, but was right on on the other bands. I'll figure
that out some other time.
Low power operation, even from KP2, presents a different challenge. On the
lower bands (160-40) I had trouble maintaining a clear run frequency. Several
times I was adjacent to one of the high power boys, and my rate really
suffered. I had to move higher in the band. At the same time the high bands
were great. The pileups never died out. Packet spots are clearly noticeable,
especially on the East Coast clusters. It seems like immediately after a spot
everyone had a 1, or a 3, call. I found it unusual that I had trouble copying
some of the other Carribean stations, especially on 20-10M.
The high point of the contest for me was sometime on Saturday afternoon. I
believe I was on 15M when my wife Judy heated up some hot dogs. I was eating
a hot dog and potato chips with my left hand, keying the rig and typing with
my right hand, and maintaining a last 10 rate on TR of 192 to 234 per hour.
Credit this endeavor to the excellent NCJ article by W6ISQ a few years back
about contest food. Judy read it and is in tune with the proper diet.
Thing that went great:
When running low power follow the MUF.
Run Europe whenever possible.
When changing bands do a quick mult sweep.
Have a plan and stick to it!
Things I would do different next time:
Arrive a few days early instead of the day before the contest.
Improve the 80 and 160 meter antennas (See previous comment).
Higher goals.
Don't miss easy mults e.g. KP4 on 160M, KP2 on several bands.
