Comments:
Last year I had 333Qs four hours into the contest and four hours over or close
to 100 by mid afternoon (after 6 hours). But my resolve pooped out and I ended
the test know I'd only given a 90% effort. This year I was 100.0% every minute
but I had 213Qs after four hours and was downright miserable by mid afternoon.
I spent the rest of the contest scraping and scratching to make up and ended
up with a modest improvement and a lot of satisfaction from the effort. My
expectations of glory were blown but I got in plenty of character building :-)
The only nasty operating I noticed was a pinhead jamming me for a long time on
14.311 in the middle of the night during a decent opening to Europe when the
band wasn't the least bit crowded. I never figured out what I did to annoy
that guy but he/she had a deadly pink noise generator carefully timed to my
attempts to receive. One European tried to stick with me but after 10 minutes
the bozobox was still blasting away. I hope he wore out his finals. I outlasted
him but then 20 meters dired up again. I can recall a half dozen episodes now
where I encountered bizaare behavior around 14.310-14.314.
But I found the other contest ops courteous to a fault. I overheard a number
who stopped their runs and spent a lot of time helping newcomers figure out
the contest. I guess my samples were the other end of the bell curve from what
KH2D experienced.
This marks the first anniversery of ARRL doing real log checking and I found
myself being very very careful with the exchanges. It will be interesting
to compare the accuracy and see if that gives me a further improvement over
last year. Many thanks to the organizers of this contest and to the log
checkers. Assuming no 747s crash into my house I'll look for you guys and gals
next year.
Regards,
Pete Soper
