Wife went to Houston, No 1 daughter to a friend's, so No. 2 daughter, the dogs
and I headed up to the Cabin Fri nite. No travel problems even with the storm.
Arrived at 10 PM, inside temp was about 26 F. By the time I got a path shoveled
(2 ft of snow on the ground), the fire going, the van unpacked and the temp up
50 F it was 2330 and I was too cold and tired to operate. Got up at 7 AM, got
the
gear hooked up and started on 15 meters. The amplifier kept locking up. After
14 QSOs I quit to troubleshoot.3 hours later after fixing a broken connection
in my keying interface, 3 or four torroids, and a review of the ground system,
breakfast for man and beast, and doggie walks, I was back on the air. Made
about 270 QSOs in the next 3 hours, and then went to the store, got gas and
went to the West Torch River Ski trail with Cristin for a 1 hour ski. The ski
trail is within spitting distance of the Navy's ELF transmitter at Clam Lake.
I've
tapped into their antenna. Unfortunately the antenna, though about 10 x 10 miles
is underground, and the 12 mile run of RG-58 from the cabin introduces some
losses.
It was a real bear burying it too. No one seems to hear me. I decided to quit
after I made 1000 QSOs plus
one for good luck. From my multiplier total you can see I spent 90% of my
time CQing, and little S&P effort. Conditions seemed pretty good 40 meters
and up. High absorbtion on 80 and 160. Only 6 band station was 6D2X.
Expect to see some high scores.
Best wishes to all and everyone get on for the Wisconsin QSO party Sunday
12 March 1800-0100 Mon. UTC.
