Comments:
It was K9AY vs Mother Nature first night. Heavy rain started at 2355. Worked
mostly S&P through rain static for an hour, then the heart of the storm hit.
High winds sheared the locking pin on the mast, letting the antenna
weathervane, and the SWR went up on the beam. Ran ~600 watts through EU prime
time while periodically checking the beam direction. SWR went too high for the
amp about 0700 so I had to use antenna #2, a wire dipole at 50 ft.
Fortunately, I have a crankup tower which simplified repairs on Saturday.
Found no physical damage to the elements, so the problem is the matching
section or loading coils. Took down the beam, pulled off the reflector and
reinstalled it as a rotatable dipole to get me through the rest of the 'test.
Despite the problems, I had plenty of fun, worked lots of QSOs and snagged some
rare mults. (No KL7 or KP4 -- that's really weird!)
