Comments:
This may rate as one of the most unusual IARU submissions. All the QSO's were
OJ's! I did this back in 1996 as well but VE3 to W6 was a lot easier path than
VE3 to OH! We even had 10m openings then. This "SWLing with TX" is long on
Search and short on Pounce. It was almost hypnotic to tune the band and hear a
seemingly endless string of thundering HQ's, 27's, 28's, 29's and 37's while
looking for weak 18's, OJ's, and guys just operating like WRTC operators! The
high ends of the bands (15 and 20) were where most of the teams migrated to call
CQ to NA successfully, especially on SSB.
All QSO's were S&P, no OH2AQ web or packet, thus making this a legal SOABMixed
entry. I doubt whether I might have worked more by calling CQ's, considering the
strength of the other signals and the time constraints on the OJ's. I would have
had to send a speculative "OJ?" often to pull them out. Most of the rest of
Europe had many dB's of edge except around 03-05z when the OJ's, though only
s6-7, were suddenly conspicuous on 20m. At 0446z I bagged OJ7X for #52 and it
was indeed the last one! Couldn't make any new OJ QSO's right to the end of the
contest. (Also took 5 hrs of zzz's). 15m didn't perform Sunday morning. Not a
single OJ heard where I worked 3 in the first 3 minutes at 1200z Saturday.
Congratulations to all the WRTC operators. Thanks for an enjoyable experience.
