Our score is probably a tad bit higher, somehow we're missing about 60 q's in
the file I have. No biggy, Field Day isn't really a contest, right? :)
W7UQ setup on top of Moscow Mountain at an AWESOME location. We managed to
assemble and put up a 4 el 20m wire yagi, 2 el 40m wire yagi, and a 2 el 80m
wire yagi at about 4700 feet ASL. Roughly 2400 above the average surrounding
terrain. Quite the view from up there! We also had a 4 element 6m beam and a 5
el 2m beam as our main VHF setup. We had assorted 432 gear, including KD7PHG's
monster quagi, but no qso's were made on that band.
It's great to see the W7UQ group so active!! Everyone had a great time, despite
a few problems we had. Our main 2nd antenna was an all band vertical and it was
toast upon arrival at the site. Therefore we didn't have a 15 or 10m antenna,
and we were too lazy to care about putting up the 160 antenna. Put up the 4 el
20m yagi and finally fired it up at almost 1am local. The first qso was with
ZS1EL and he was 599. Yep, it works. That thing ROCKED!!! Too bad it didn't
work on Fone. We could just never really get anything going on SSB, even though
people kept saying how loud we were. The 2 el 40 also rocked the band, but same
story there. CW was definitely the place to be this weekend from this part of
the world. I have no idea why.
While we were working on our all band vertical problem, we realized that Doug,
KD7YBZ, had internet on his cell phone running into his laptop! Great, we can
look up the manual online! While we were wondering where to look up the manual
for the Hustler 6BTV vertical, we soon realized that hustler.com was the
incorrect choice.
As I was the only CW op, we spent the majority of the time on SSB. It's too bad
we were CQing endlessly there, I really felt like we were loud! The new boyz
had a great time and did FANTASTIC. We're gonna have a few new FB ops on our
hands! KB5TSS rocked the 6m band and worked some great stuff!!! KC7RSO had his
best run on HF, however short lived it was. That's what happens when you work
everyone so fast! :) KD7YGF spent his last weekend operating with us before
heading off to Iraq. GL in Iraq Jeff, take care of yourself!
It may not have been a 5000 qso effort, but it was GREAT fun. A lot of work,
but it was worth it. We'll be back next year for sure, hopefully with more CW
ops, and more separation to get more than 1 station on a band. 1 station on CW
and 1 on SSB would be awesome. Thanks to the boyz at UQ who put up with my
crazy idea of big wire yagis, and all the work they put into getting this thing
to happen. Also a big thanks to Greg KO7C, and Jeff KD7PHG, our faculty
advisors. Of course thanks to the guys at Hahn's rental who generously donated
a 3.7KW generator to a poor college club for the weekend!
