An amazing weekend !

With the solar flux in the low 70's, I knew that the key to a great weekend was
having quiet geomagnetic conditions and luck. During the week before the
contest, 15 meters was opening to Europe and JA on about half of the days, even
with undisturbed conditions, so I knew it would be iffy. Without at least some
good propagation on 15, it would be a really slow weekend from New Mexico.

The contest started off auspiciously. I started on 15, running JA. That lasted
exactly 8 minutes, with 32 QSO's, then it was lights-out for 15, and I was
fighting it out on 20 by 0017Z. That didn't last long, either. At 0134Z I was
already on 40, doing S&P to Europe. The night went slowly, with the only
highlight being 80 meters into Europe. 23 European QSO's on 80 may not sound
like much to most of you, but it's about 20 QSO's more than usual compared to my
other Colorado and New Mexico efforts. The 40 meter JA run was more like a
crawl, and 80 meters to JA was a wasteland, thanks to the new BY woodpecker.
568 QSO's in the log in the first 13 hours. That's not good.

Daylight came, and someone through the on-switch ! Unbelievable EU run on 15.
180 QSO's in the 15Z hour - a new record for me for a EU run from out west.
Only lasted until 1645Z, but it sure was fun ! The mid-day went as expected -
Work mults on 15 and 20, listen to the guys in the Pacific northwest work EU on
20 that is totally inaudible this far south. 15 opened to JA just after their
sunrise. Hooray ! Back-to-back 160, 171 and 98 hours. The run never peetered
out - just a steady roar of JA's until the band dropped out at 0035Z. An hour
on 20 after that, then 6 hours of much-needed sleep. Crawl more JA's on 40
during the night, while looking for any new 2 or 3 point QSO's on 80 and 160.
Daytime came, and with it, another 15 meter opening. This one was a little
different than Saturday. The Saturday opening was all southern Europe, while
the Sunday opening was weaker, but included many northern EU stations (but not
any OH, SM, LA). For example, on Saturday, I worked only 1 G station, while on
Sunday I worked 47 G's. The Sunday 15 EU opening lasted a little longer (until
1715Z), and then more futile attempts to grind it out on 20 while hunting mults
on 15, and waiting for 10 to open to anywhere. 15 again opened to JA on
schedule, with an unbelievable final 15 minutes - 3 QSO's in the last minute,
with the last-10 rate meter at 203 ! Wow !

Thanks to all for the QSO's and a fun weekend.
