Comments:
Man, that was a whole lot of fun -- one of the best contest outings in a few
years and I was grinning at the end after some great action on 20M down to the
wire.
Despite being at the botton of solar cycle 24, I ended up with my third-best
ever score, behind 2014 and 1012, which were the two years of the double peak of
the past cycle. So maybe we're already past the bottom and on the way to better
things. Or it was just an anomalously good weekend on the bands.
Well, below 15M at least. The higher bands are still in the trough. 15M was just
barely open, and I ended up with about 7 fewer contacts than last yer.
20M was good to Europe Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon, with signals over
the pole Sunday as loud as I've heard them in years.
40M was stellar for North America but not much Europe worked. Those 4-pointers
are great. 80M was a bit better than last year but is still a wasteland of space
with few stations going down there. What a missed opportunity to rack up easy
additional contact points.
Ran the AL80B with 650W or so for almost the entire time. During a break, I
re-assembled one of my SB221 amps that has been on the bench for nine months,
and got it running. Had to install a step-start relay that has been sitting
beside the amp for too long, and rewired things for 240V now that I have a good
line running to the shack. A little more horsepower with the additional 3-500Z
sure made a difference in rate for the final 2.5 hours when Europe and Japan
were both booming in.
