Comments:
Very tough weekend on the Topband here in the Pacific Northwest. In the first
operating spurt of 6 hours - only about one station was heard East of Colorado.
After some sleep - the band was much better just before East Coast sunrise.
This was the best time to work into the Northeast.
The second evening seemed promising as the band sounded good at sunset.
Stations in the Southeast were strong and I even worked a few of them... but
then I could hear the band starting to fade away. Was trying to work a station
in LA and their signal just went to almost nothing over 20 minutes or so.
Managed a bit of a run mostly to WI and MN stations before going to bed again.
Got up before East Coast sunrise and called about 27 unanswered CQs and went
back to bed. Worked five stations later in the morning.
Did worked ten JAs the first morning - none the second. No other DX except for
the few Caribbean / South Americans that were on.
The most fun QSO was with W7DRA. Mike uses old style transmitters - like a MOPA
and he zero beats you by pressing his handkey down. I heard his warbly signal
zero beat me so I answered him before he sent his callsign. Been wanting to do
this for years and finally pulled it off. My last attempt failed - because I
had properly detected the use of a MOPA - but it was NO3M instead.
Rig - K4D - diversity with Beverages and HiZ array - Alpha 77 or KPA1500.
Ant: Gamma matched 97 foot tower with a 4L 40 OWA on top.
