? In the Summer of 1988, I wrote an article titled "Circuit Improvements
for the Kenwood TL-922 Amplifier". *QST* rejected the article at just
under the speed of coast-to-coast shortwave propagation. It was almost
as if *QST* had read the article before hand. . Hmmm . I guessed that
this may have had something to do with a 922-owner/friend of mine being
the friend of Kenwood's U.S. troubleshooter. My friend told me he had
given a xerox copy of the CI 922 manuscript (that I sent him for
comments) to the factory-guy before he returned to Japan. Anyone who
understands "ringesho" knows that any such article is highly affrontive
to JA corporate managers. . And so, I rewrote the article, removed
references to the 922, and changed the title to "Improved Anode Parasitic
Suppression for Modern Amplifier Tubes". The redacted manuscript was
accepted for publication and it appeared in the October, 1988 *QST*.
Within a week, I began receiving letters - sometimes more than a dozen a
day. The one-day record was 33-letters. The rest is history. . . It
changed my life.
/ The original manuscript is available on my Web site.
/ I would not hesitate to buy a replacement 922. The mods are easier to
make than they might seem, and it's a good way to build self-esteem.
