Jerry,

In this case I'd recommend the Ameritron Solid State amp that uses
4 FET's. It comes with it's own 50vdc power supply which plugs into
120vac. It's rated for 600 watts PEP but owners claim 700 watts out.
Only draws up to 10amps off the mains. Instant on, select the lowpass
filter and make contacts. Everyone I've had follow up this
recommendation
has been pleased and all are elderly folks with the same as your issues.

I believe Ameritron's model is the ALS-600 and it retails for 1200 bucks
or so. For this price and performance I'd say it's hard to beat, and
I've
not heard of any owners having problems with them and or war stories. I
can't recall, but believe it even has VSWR shut down. So with the later
if true it's pretty much goof proof.

        'Y2K ? Because 1k is 3 decibels down in amplitude. 9991 krr2ak'
