I've been repairing my Dad's MLA-2500. It started with bad filter
capacitors, but then I decided it really needed a step-start circuit.
In adding that, I had to alter toe mains connection.
The cord is standard 3-wire rubber-jacketed cord. That jacked seemed
to be in good shape: no cracks or other damage. Yet, as unsoldrered
the connections inside the amp, I saw that the insulation on the
individual wires was cracking. ?No problem, I'll just strip back the
jacket and find the flexible insulation, and use it from there."
To my surprise, there was no flexible insulation left anywhere. It
was all brittle and would crack under sharp bends. Needless to say,
I replaced the power cord. Yet I was surprised at it's condition; it
could certainly have been a fire hazard.
I don't know how old the cord was, but it may have been the original.
If os, it was well over 20 yrs old. I'd never considered the
longevity of power cords, but I will now!
