I am pleased to say that I found the fault after dropping the front panel and 
using a mirror to see behind the 160m coil. I found that the turns had dropped 
around the back and were not next to each other. There was also no adhesive on 
the turns either. A simple fix was to place a 10mm cable tie over the top of 
the former and one at the bottom and gently tightening the cable ties, I slid 
the bottom one upwards until the tuns were tight against each other all round. 
Testing the amp with 10w drive produced ample rf out. 
Lesson learned is that even "experts"  make mistakes.
