In 1970, when the RPI Radio Club was giving birth to the Mount Greylock
Expeditionary Force, we weren't too thrilled about signing W2SZ/1. Kinda
neutralized some of the advantage of our "rare" WMass section. So I applied
for an additional-station license and got WA1MUG, station location: "Summit
of Mount Greylock, Adams, Mass." We used that call to great advantage; we
were just about the only mountaintop operation that wasn't signing portable.
FCC rules changes, grid squares, and a desire to show off the club call all
contributed to the retirement of WA1MUG. Judging from subsequent results,
maybe /1 wasn't as much of a handicap as we feared! 73. --John/K2MM
