I think Dave N6DLU is correct. QST cannot be in the position of
summarizing the rules incorrectly (e.g., SS time off), then penalizing
those who do not obtain full text copies, or those who rely on the
incorrect summaries. The whole point is to induce newbies to participate,
so at least give them the straight scoop. Why can't the real, full-text
rules be provided at least in tiny mast-head size print. Even if you have
to strain to read it, use a magnifying glass, or photo-enlarge them on a

Why can't they devote they place the rules in print towards the back
after the section manager reports and say in the announcement that full
rules are on page xx. The annoucements read well ... but to search
everywhere for rules is inane really. I think this compromise works
better than having to check in the internet, or buying a special book.
Thought the contest year book idea is a neat idea to have the forms and
rules in one place.
I have expected to find the rules during the contest to clarify my questions.

Comments: 40 was tougher sledding than usual from NW Ohio. Had difficulty
working EU stations that I usually work with one call. Thanks to all who put
together the thread on Beverage antennas, I managed to get one of 125 ft
across my back yard. The good news was I could hear LOTS of stuff, even on
160; the bad news is it just increased my frustration and not being heard.
160 was strange--for me: worked some new EU stuff with relative ease while
not being able to touch some stations in the Carribean. The contest came to
an unanticipated halt when I began experiencing power supply problems with
the 91B. Guess I won't be the only one calling ETO tomorrow morning. Next
week: 160 from WD9INF!

I operated single band 160m high power in this year's CQ WW CW Contest.
96 QSOs x (43 countries + 17 zones) = 14,760 points
I was originally intending to operate multi-single all bands, however, at
the last minute my other operators cancelled, so I just played around on
160m, not really intending to do much expect perhaps work a new band
country or two. I only CQed half-heartedly a few times. For the most part
I just tuned the band, took lots of breaks, and sleep a lot (for a 160m
contest). When I totaled my score, I was shocked! I should have gone all
out! I am sure KV0Q and N6SS, from this part of the world, far surpassed
my score.
Conditions to Europe were outstanding. Propagation to Japan seemed below
average. Propagation to the south was terrible -- I did not work a single
station below the Equator!
I worked 5 new 160m countries during the contest: TK2C, ZB2X, OH0MEP,
YT9W, and OY9JD. I missed the TF that N6TR worked, it would have been
another new one.
Here are the stations I did not hear on 160m at any time: HC8N, ZL7CW,
ZM2K, J6/WJ2O, AH0T, ZS6EZ, TY5A, any VK, any PY.
Here are the stations that I called and called and called who continually
"CQed in my face": RS3A, EA5BY and two other EA stations, FG5BG, UX2M,
DL0KF, JH5ZJS, and OZ7YY. I never worked any of these guys. RS3A (or
UX2M) would have been a double mult.
At 0239z on 26 Nov on 1836 kHz I heard a station clearly sign "AR7QO"
several times. I could not get his attention. Who is this? The AR prefix
is assigned to Pakistan, but I doubt he was there.

Several days ago someone complained that his transceiver started jumping
frequencies during a contest, and asked if anyone else has had this problem.
I experienced something similar in the recent CQWW SSB, and since someone
may have the same problem in a future contest, here is my experience.
Sunday morning suddenly my VFO started scanning, and most of the front panel
controls were inoperable. I cut power to the FT1000; and when I returned
power, the digital readout was "frozen" and all the button controls were
still inoperable, but the tuning knob worked. I just couldn't read the
frequency, change bands, modes, use the RIT, etc. I tried disconnecting
everything from the back panel -- footswitch, amp relay line, and ground --
but no change.
Now I operate from a cabin in the mountains of West Virginia, pretty
isolated and over 100 miles from home. I had a spare amp., but not a spare
xcvr. What to do? Since I was single band 20, I stayed on, guessing at the
band edges by never going below KM1H (or other stateside signal on lower
end) and staying at least one signal below the high end. Every once in a
while the xcvr would start scanning for no apparent reason, so I removed and
restored power, and resumed.
What was wrong? Well, after the contest I got out the manual and did a CPU
reset. That just stuck me at 7.000 MHz with no way to change bands. So I
unplugged everything and -- wonder of wonders -- with nothing connected the
radio operated fine.
Answer: The yellow cord connecting the Heil Proset (being used for only the
3rd time) had a short of some kind. When it was disconnected everything
worked fine. I had forgotten that the FT1000 has all sorts of stuff (like
12 v. power and frequency control) at the *mike* connector.
I had the stock Yaesu mike there in the box, had it dawned on me that VFO
scanning etc. could have somthing to do with the "mike" connector.
Conclusions: (1) when trouble shooting, disconnect *everything* 1-by-1; and
(2) have a spare rig if possible, even if an old "C" line or something.
(Unlike my "new" xcvr, all my amps are 20 or so years old, so I always cart
a spare up the mountain "in case". Several times that saved me when the old
Dentron had relay problems.)
(And by the way, to address belatedly a thread run last month -- the
Dentron (DTR2000L) is still on its original 8877 twenty years later. Tuned
input is taken care of by the xcvr's built-in antenna tuner.)

I got back this afternoon from a long bike ride at around 23:30z. I had
thought, as I was running a casual 160m single band operation in the CQ WW
DX contest, the contest was over for me a little after sunrise this
morning, so I had already shut down TR-Log and posted my score to the
Internet. There would be no more darkness until the contest was over and I
figured I was through.
When I stopped contesting this morning, I left the rig turned on to 160m.
When I walked in the radio room at around 23:40z, I heard signals coming
from the headphones. I put the 'phones on and was surprised to hear
Europeans, loud Europeans. I worked 4 more QSOs before zero hour: SP5GRM,
HG73DX and LA9GX were multiplers and all-time new 160m countries for me
(also worked a G3)!
Friday and Saturday, I didn't hit 160m until about 00:40z or so. Now I
know to hit 160m well before sunset.
My revised 1995 CQ WW CW Contest score follows. I operated single band
160m high power.
100 QSOs x (46 countries + 17 zones) = 16,254 points

These are the summaries of PI4ZLD.
We were Multi Single with four operators: PA3BTH, PE3EOB, PA3GCU and
DF6JC.
We had the "normal" trouble during the contest: delta loop broken, had
to fix it in the rain and wind; lineairs wouldn't switch to transmit
which we had to fix during the test.
Unfortunately conditions were not as good as with the SSB contest, but
it was nice meeting you all.

Some conditions!
Had a GREAT time working single band 160 in CQWW. Decided to work the contest
only 10 mins before start.
At first, I just ment to pick new ones, as I had to attend to some family
activitys during the weekend, but what the heck, I thought, lets put fire on
the candle at both ends - Burning fast but beautiful ! - :-)
Anyway, had to get SOME sleep ofcourse, so had 3-4 hours off each night.
Have never heard so many strong US stns on the band, fantastic! We worked abt
200 US calls.
Also, I did put up a new antenna a couple of weeks ago, a halfsquare with
coil-loaded vertical sections, so
it was vy exciting to try performance in competition. Condx were excellent
ofcourse, but nevertheless I´m quite
satisfied with the performance of this piece of wire......
