[CQ-Contest] Heath SB220

Dear friends from the reflector,

I had been waiting for a replacement switch for my FL2100Z for
4 years and a half and finally I could get two, one directly from Yaesu
(at last) and one from my good friend N5UL (thanks Charles). That
one provided by Yaesu directly is broken. It sounds like a joke but
it is not! It was my last try with YAESU amplifiers. They are no
good for contests, not rugged at all and the assistance is the worst
I have ever seen in my whole life (there is nothing in the world that
I can compare with). You guys cannot wonder the number of FL2100 (B, F or Z)
that are broken for a lack of replacement parts in Brazil.
YAESU DID IT AGAIN! They are right with their advertisement.

I am not here to complain about YAESU but to ask you something.
Another brazilian ham looked my amplifier (working now) and asked me
if I would like to trade his Heath Kit SB220 for my FL2100Z. His amplifier
has a little problem with the high voltage I don't know what is happening but
it is delivering about 1KW on all bands. This ham said that after 1 hour
operating with the lower voltage you can use the higher voltage. It seems
you need to heat the Power Supply to run over 1KW (the noise disappears or
something like that). My questions are:

1) Is it a good amplifier for the bands it was designed? Can I operate with
full power for an extended period of time, during a contest for example?

2) Heath no longer exists! Right? How can I find replacement parts for this
amplifier?

I have an AL-80B and I am pretty satisfied with it. The only problem
is that I only run 60% to 70% of the maximum output power during contests to
avoid tube failure.

I am crazy to get rid of my FL2100Z!!!!!!!!

73 and thank you guys,

Carlos - PY1CAS

Hi Folks
In the above post Bob talks about an external relay used for amp keying
on the 1000D. The external relay is not loud compared to the internal
relay in the radio.

Aside from Bob's fix.....wasn't there a post MANY moons ago that came
up with the same fix but in a different manner??? I have looked but to
no avail. Seems like it may have come from one of our EU
reflectorites. Anyone remember this or know who posted it??

Thanks
73/Greg
