Field day provides a training ground. After a few years the gang
knows what to bring, what to leave home-- etc.
Many clubs end up by having field day antennas, towers, generators,
tents, and all the other requirements. In general the elements are marked
for easy put together with dedicated coax and proper connectors. This does
not happen over night. but it does happen with time and experience.
As RACES officer for Bergen county NJ. I ask the various districts
about their emergency stations. Most of them are never checked, or only
checked once in a blue moon.
About 2 years ago when checking for emergency power 1/3 of the
generators were non-operational.
Ham radio is FUN! Field day provides the fun and the teaching
experience. More power to those who can put together large towers, high
power generators and clean up the interference between stations for a given
weekend.
