This is an interesting subject.
I suspect there is a consensus of the SO2R guys that, if new to SO2R, it is
a big mistake in Sprint.
BUT that is what the NCCC weekly NS affords- the opportunity to perfect
technique. It is always a pleasure, on the weekly NS, to hear N6RO, W9RE,
et-al running such smooth SO2R. It is also a gas to complete a qso with a
station and hear his near immediate cq on the second band ;-)
IMO, the objective of (Sprint) SO2R should be to boost score (very slightly)
-during those times when the rate-o-meter is working south.
Personally, when I launch SO2R, I begin a competition with myself-- can I
find a CQ (preferred) before landing a responder to my CQ ?
SO2R certainly entails trying to ensure the CQ frequency is clear and that
one tries to use good judgment re: WHEN to CQ on that second radio. I agree
that setting software to rip a CQ on Radio 2 after calling someone is
questionable (at best).
To quote K5ZD-- "The goal of quality SO2R operating is that no one listening
can tell you are using two radios"
However:
One problem I do encounter is I am running CQ on R1 and break the CQ to call
a station on R2.
Enough of the CQ went out on R1 that a caller shows up. Problem being if the
guy I called on R2 just came back, I am not in a position to answer the
caller to my CQ on R1 ? No fun being an alligator !
One of the top reasons we contest is the challenge. As such, SO2R provides
plenty of it ;-)
