Joe, I heard the same compression effect as you until I turned off the AGC in 
the second rx.  The effect is also not heard in the Orion monitor (its 
subreceiver).

I haven't used the specific mics you have.  If you need to set the gain very 
high with them, this could be the cause of the low level noise you hear on your 
tx sig.  If this is the case, some external mic preamplification would probably 
clean it up although you might check whether other stations actually are 
hearing the noise in a qso.
