JIM SWAN 1922 - 2006
It is with regret that we announce the passing of James Swan VK2BQS.
Jim was a past President of A.N.A.R.T.S., a well known contester in
earlier days, and a very good friend to many in the Australian Amateur Radio
World.
Jim was a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Air Force during
WWII, flying many types of aircraft, especially the Avro Anson on
coastal patrols searching for Japanese Submarines, and B24 Liberators
on bombing sorties in South East Asia. Before leaving the RAAF he was employed
ferrying aircraft from the Richmond Air Base to all parts of Australia, flying
many types of aircraft including Spitfires, Beauforts, Beaufighters, Mosquitos,
Hudsons, and many others.
He carried on flying post war, joining Trans Australian Airlines,
where he first became a Captain and then a Check Captain. He later
joined the new airline East West Airlines and rose to become their
Chief Pilot. While in this office he ferried all the East West F27 Friendship
Aircraft from Amsterdam to Sydney.
For his work with the Air Line Pilots Guild, he was awarded the Freedom
of the City of London, by that cities Lord Mayor.
On retirement from flying he took up Amateur Radio in a big way with
CW at 20 wpm and building homebrew. He soon found his niche in RTTY.
He left Sydney about 10 years ago to take up residence at Karuah, a
small NSW town, a part of the huge Port Stephens area.
He will be sorely missed.
