Yes, I am using a "knee switch" - mounted just like you say - on the side of
the block of drawers under the desk. It is homebrew - made from a
microswitch activated by a hinged piece of aluminum. The whole assembly is
mounted on another piece of aluminum which is mounted by 4 wood screws to
the desk.
