Hi Marty,
The choice between WL and TR depends on what you want to do. If you
are looking for a logger that will also do digital modes, and is heavily
mouse dependant, then you want to go with WrieLog. If you want the best
cw contest software, go with TR.
Having used both, I will not use writelog, for the following reasons.
1) too mouse dependant. Just like the problems created when some
wordprocessors made too many functions mouse dependant, the net effect
is to slow good keyboarders down. I know too many 110+ wpm typists
who curse the fact that they now have to use a mouse to do things that
could be done with a couple of keystrokes before. The mouse may help,
a poor to mediocre typist in some areas, but it often increases the
possibility of problems. Further, the mouse dependency means that there
are three input devices that the cw op must deal with, keyboard, paddles,
and mouse. This is not an issue for digital/ssb ops, and I can see
why it might be more popular with, and less problimatic for them.
2) paddle input more complicated. Check out the differences between
the circuits required for paddle input in TR and WL. TR wins.
3) Writelog is not usable on many of the computers that hams regularly
use. TR can be used on anything from a 386 to a pentium... try that
with WL.
I will refrain from saying too much about "windows" other than to
say, that a stable windows system is a contradiction in terms.
I hope and pray for a linux version of TRlog some day.
