1. I didn't say hand mike.
2. I think Ten-Tec holds themselves to a higher quality standard than at
least some of the other manufacturer's, so whatever the actual cost of the
mike would, I'm sure they would use a higher quality one.
3. Cost to manufacturer is irrelevant. Do you really think that just
because the cost of the mike might be $10-$15-$20, that's all that SOME
manufacturer's would raise the cost of the radio?
4. As someone who once sold Amateur Radio gear (including retail), I can
assure you that yes, the extra $20-30 or whatever DOES make a difference.
I've seen people quibble about as little as $5. And one of the reasons you
see less retail Amateur stores than ever is that there's always someone
willing to shave that $5 off the cost, via an 800 (or 888 or 877) number.
What YOU have to watch out for is that they don't make that $5 or more up in
"shipping and handling" or in cost of accessories... but that is another
thread for another time.
5. A DOA mike out of the box is less than worthless, because now it costs
you headache, heartache, and time to get it exchanged -- and possibly
shipping & handling costs too. All the more reason to NOT stiff someone
with a microphone they may not want.

First of all, the ten-tec hand mic, even when sold separately, sells for
$28, so $50 is a bit of an exaggeration.

Things generally cost less when bundled with other, more expensive things
because there's less time and packaging involved with getting them to you.

Finally, that $28 hand mic probably cost Ten-Tec less than $10 -- as you
say, depending on quantity.

Frankly, if it added $20-$30 to the price of my Jupiter, I don't think you'd
hear me complaining about that 2-3%. Folks routinely pay twice to three
times that amount in sales tax.

And at least it would probably work. (The hand mic that came with my
IC-756PRO was dead out of the box.)
