I ran into a similar problem setting my Argonaut up for SSB. Seems
the MIC level setting was very touchy and had to be set somewhere
around eight o'clock or so. A little more....and distortion, a little
less....and low output. Two things cleared up the situation.
First, I reduced the MIC gain by turning the internal mic gain control
to minimum gain. Now the MIC level is set at ten o'clock to twelve
o'clock depending on which microphone I'm using. The setting is
much less critical now as well. This made the biggest difference.
Secondly, a friend of mine helped me with my microphone technique
when using the hand mic. In the service, he was taught to hold the
mic with one's had cupped and the active surface of the mic facing
the cup of ones hand. Holding it at approx a 45 degree angle and
several inches away from one's mouth, speak into the area between
one's hand and the mic. BIG difference! The supplied mic seems
to be prone to overdriving until I adopted this technique. I did not
have a similar problem with the old 701 hand mic though.
Finally, I do not use the speech processor. Can't figure out just
what it does other than cause distortion at high settings.
