To back up my staement regarding phase noise, here is a quote from page 10-9 of the 1987 ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook. "Phase noise is generated within the oscillators of a synthesizer. A crystal oscillator has little phase noise. Synthesizers that use only crystal oscillators usually have excellent phase-noise characteristics. Some synthesizers use voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs). VCOs have considerably higher amounts of phase noise."
